Self Fulfilling Prophecy...Looking into the Future and Seeing Red!

In reading CNN this morning, the statement that Obama's plans for mortgage adjustments has only helped 55,000 borrowers is extremely concerning.  It seems so ironic that the mortgage companies are the ones that got us here with their bad practices and now the future seems to be set in stone as the complexity of these mortgages prevents servicers from modifying them to protect our markets from total collapse!  Our government must understand that time was of the essence a year ago and we cannot afford any more delay.  The economy is forcing hundreds of thousands of layoffs and the waves of foreclosures are rising and will continue to rise this year as people cannot afford to make their payments.  This is going to completely destroy the lower end of the market with continued flooding of distressed properties.  Next on the list will be the bankruptcy of municipalities that cannot support the infrastructure they have built over the past 10 years which will likely leave entire neighborhoods with no municipal services or extraordinarily high taxes, further pushing people out of these markets.

This suggests the first to fall will likely be the rural communities close to major metropolitan cities where blue collar workers have purchased property.  We may very well see the Wild West Ghost Town emerge where it’s sim impossible to live in a home without being totally self sufficient.  Even if something is done today these municipalities are facing tax appraisals being challenges on a massive basis and severe loss of tax revenue to support schools and infrastructure.  Our school systems are not in the greatest shape to begin with but in the next few years we very well could see brand new schools having to be closed either because there are no students, or no money.  In any case it seems to me that they will have no choice but to cut budgets, services, teachers, and maintenance personnel to keep them up and ultimately lose their ability to provide quality educations.

As a contributor to further woes is the sheer number of individuals in trouble and an electronic, impersonal approach to customer service by the companies that hold our ability to recover.  I am sure each of you has experienced this impersonality of service, lack of any sort of compassion, and total disregard for you as a customer (whether good or bad).  The problems truly stem from consolidation within the banking industry and the centralization of customer service and processing of transactions.  These companies cannot afford to hire the number of people needed to truly analyze each situation in a manner that uses common sense; therefore, I suspect that decisions are made at a global level meaning many, many people are going to fall through the cracks.  The above referenced CNN article highlights an individual, trying to do the right thing and provide information to the Lender, who is told by one group they have what they need and receives a letter from another stating the application is cancelled.  Obviously, this Lender either doesn’t care at an individual level or is simply not interested in anything other than its own self interest.  This is not to mention the fact that this is a problem THEY created!

We as citizens of this country must realize the power is in ourselves, collectively, and that the call for action is now.  And we each must do something to pressure our government to act now and not allow these huge companies to dictate the of fulfilling this prophecy they created or I am afraid our way of life will change dramatically and the separation of classes will be a chasm that is impossible to bridge.  Write to you Senators and Representatives, make your voice heard as your vote and your opinion matter most now!
